Set amongst the scenic streets lined with charming retail stores filled with gift items you won’t find anywhere else, downtown Almonte is the place to go for shopping this Christmas. And after spending your day moving from store to store, take the edge off your appetite with a meal in one of these six local eateries!
- Heirloom Café & Bistro
7 Mill St.
Situated in a restored heritage building in downtown Almonte, the Heirloom Bistro combines unique and historic architecture with a stunning view of Almonte’s iconic waterfall. Enjoy a post-shopping fine dining adventure, with culinary creations from Chef Richard Kletnieks, and rediscover how amazing food can taste. With a focus on locally sourced ingredients, diners can enjoy unique lunch menu items like a warm beet and parsnip salad, spiced lamb burger with house chutney, or a Portobello and grilled vegetable calzone. For dinner you’ll appreciate sampling dishes like house pate with port jelly and sundried blueberries, paired with seared Atlantic sea scallops accompanied by coconut basmati rice.
- Superior Restaurant
84 Mill St.
A downtown Almonte icon, Superior Restaurant has been in its current Mill Street location for more than a decade! As a local spot you’ll find a good crowd inside virtually any day of the week. Superior Restaurant offers diners a laid-back, casual atmosphere, and perfect place for a low-key lunch like soup and a sandwich, or traditional Canadian favourites like a club or hot chicken sandwich. If you have room, top off your meal with a homemade pie and you’ll have plenty of energy for the second leg of your holiday shopping outing! The old-fashioned diner interior features seats at the counter or table seating. Plentiful servings, quick, efficient service, and a friendly atmosphere all make this a great place to take a break while shopping.
- Café Postino
73 Mill St.
Experience a meal at Café Postino and you’ll find yourself dining in a little piece of Italy, in the heart of downtown Almonte! Located in the old Post Office, you’ll find the unique architecture and European décor creates a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Café Postino offers a variety of dishes that will satisfy anyone with a taste for Italian cuisine, and an extensive menu with selections like delicious homemade pizza, lasagna pasticciata, Italian sausage sautéed with peppers, onion and black olives, or their signature dish, veal scaloppini.
- Mill Street Crepe Company
14 Mill St.
Who doesn’t love crepes? The Mill Street Crepe Company is open seven days a week and offers a menu focused on crepes (naturally!). Situated in the downtown core with a French café- style interior you’ll be impressed with the menu items you’ll find here. Choose between a crepe, a soup or salad, or indulge in all three! Crepe options are unusual and tempting, with choices like a chicken Cordon Bleu crepe, pulled pork crepe, or Jambalaya crepe. For dessert a must-try is the Nutella crepe, which has to be experienced to truly be appreciated!
- Barley Mow
79 Little Bridge St.
The Barley Mow can be found tucked behind the storefronts on Mill Street, but even if it’s a little hard to find you’ll find it well worth the effort. Situated only feet from the scenic Mississippi River and the rapids that lead to Almonte’s iconic waterfall, your meal will stretch longer than intended while you enjoy the view of the water rushing past. The Barley Mow brings you a pub-like atmosphere and serves traditional favourites like fish and chips, steak and ale pie, or a hearty burger. Choose from one of the wide varieties of beer served on tap, and pay close attention to local brewery options to complement your meal.
- Robin’s Nest Tea Room
